Identify the Physical Basis

A positive displacement meter counts volumes passed through its measuring mechanism, driven by the flowing fluid. A metering pump supplies energy while moving the liquid. DwyerOmega’s mechanical-flow explanation distinguishes these functions. Similar-looking gears or chamber terminology do not establish that a meter can drive the transfer or that a pump provides an independently verified measurement.

Work Through an Example

In a hypothetical layout, a motor-driven gear pump feeds a passive oval-gear meter and then a receiving vessel. The pump produces transfer against the system duty; the meter reports passed volume within its measuring scope. Removing the pump and expecting the meter to create the same delivery would omit the driving function. Removing the meter and counting pump revolutions instead changes the evidence used to infer delivery.

Use the Result in the Review

Draw the energy path and the measurement path separately. Identify which component has the drive, where the fluid supplies energy to a measuring mechanism and which signal reaches the controller. Record whether the meter measures all delivered flow or only one branch. Then request the selected component’s product-contact suitability, allowable pressure loss and measurement evidence as distinct requirements.

The gear-pump filler provides a real pump-based dosing context. Do not infer an additional PD flowmeter from that product name. The worksheet helps describe a proposed arrangement accurately before comparing pump and meter quotations; it does not assign a metering accuracy to a pump merely because its displacement is known.

Does the proposed component meter displaced volume or drive the fluid?

Customer Questions

Does the term PD mean every device is a pump?

No. A displacement-based meter measures passed volume.

Can pump rotation substitute for independent meter evidence?

It changes the inference and needs its own delivery validation.

Does a passive meter have no pressure loss?

No. Assess its selected hydraulic loss as part of the route.
