An electromagnetic flowmeter needs a conductive liquid within its selected measuring scope. Product thickness alone cannot establish compatibility.
Identify the Physical Basis
An electromagnetic meter detects the voltage generated as a conductive fluid moves through its magnetic field. Endress+Hauser’s explanation states that the manufacturer defines the minimum conductivity for a particular design and size. Conductivity is an electrical property. It is different from viscosity, density and whether a liquid looks clear.
Work Through an Example
Imagine a hypothetical selection sheet requiring at least 10 µS/cm under its stated conditions. A submitted product result of 8 µS/cm does not meet that illustrative basis even if its viscosity is convenient. Another product measured at 20 µS/cm satisfies that one condition, but this does not establish compatibility of the liner, electrodes, temperature range or installation. The invented threshold is not a recommendation for an HM instrument.
Use the Result in the Review
Provide the product’s conductivity with temperature, composition range and measurement reference. Include start-up, cleaning and product transitions if the selected meter must operate during them. Compare those values against the exact selected model’s requirement. Ask how an unusable or marginal signal is reported to the dosing controller, so a missing valid flow measurement is not silently treated as zero actual flow.
Discuss the flowmeter filling application with the actual formulation and selected instrument. This guide does not assert an electromagnetic option is installed or required. It supplies the electrical suitability question that a general viscosity or throughput discussion can miss.

Customer Questions
Is a clear liquid conductive enough?
Appearance does not establish conductivity.
Does low viscosity resolve low conductivity?
No. They are different physical properties.
Is one generic threshold valid for every magmeter?
Use the selected manufacturer’s model-specific requirement.
