Ideal CSTR and Plug Flow: Mean Residence Time Does Not Fix Exposure History

Mean residence time does not specify every fluid element’s time in a process. Keep the ideal flow model with the number.

Mean residence time does not specify every fluid element’s time in a process. Keep the ideal flow model with the number.

Define the Process Model

MIT’s non-ideal-reactor lecture compares ideal plug flow and a continuously stirred tank through residence-time distributions. Ideal plug flow gives one transit time; an ideal mixed tank gives a spread of exit times. Two systems can share V/Q and nevertheless expose material to different time histories.

Compare a Hypothetical Case

Assume fictional steady systems each have participating volume 100 L and flow 10 L/min, giving τ = 10 min. In ideal plug flow, material crosses after that model transit time. In the ideal mixed-tank exponential distribution, the fraction exiting before τ is 1 − e⁻¹ ≈ 63.2%. Calling ten minutes the minimum residence time would misdescribe the latter model.

Complete the Engineering Review

State the active volume, flow condition and residence model. Distinguish a mean from a minimum, percentile or required exposure interval. If the application depends on time history, retain suitable tracer evidence and the associated input/output measurement plan. Check real bypass, dispersion and inactive regions before assigning an ideal model to equipment.

For a manufacturing-vessel enquiry, describe whether the duty is batch or continuous and how process time matters. The ideal examples do not establish reaction completion, thermal treatment or an HM operating limit. They show why equal nominal residence figures can support different process interpretations.

Customer Questions

Is V/Q always a minimum exposure time?

It is not the minimum in the ideal mixed-tank model.

Can equal means hide different histories?

Different residence-time distributions can share a mean.

Does this establish reaction completion?

Reaction and process evidence are separate requirements.
