Liquid Volume at Reference Temperature: Keep the Density Ratio

A liquid volume at flowing temperature and the same material’s volume at an agreed reference temperature are different reporting quantities.

A liquid volume at flowing temperature and the same material’s volume at an agreed reference temperature are different reporting quantities.

Identify the Physical Basis

Reference-volume reporting needs a stated fluid-property and temperature basis. OMEGA’s corrected-liquid-volume manual describes temperature input and stored liquid properties for this purpose. For the same unchanged mass, V_ref = V_process × ρ_process/ρ_ref. This density identity requires representative values for the same material; it is not an assumed correction coefficient for every formulation.

Work Through an Example

Take a hypothetical 10 L at process conditions where the density is 0.98 kg/L. That quantity contains 9.8 kg. If the agreed reference-condition density for the same liquid is 1.00 kg/L, its reference volume is 9.8 L. The liquid has not lost 0.2 L during accounting. The two volumes refer to different conditions. These invented densities illustrate the definition rather than an HM product’s thermal behaviour.

Use the Result in the Review

Label the process and reference temperature explicitly in the requirement and report. State whether density comes from an approved property table, a measured sample or the selected instrument. Check that composition is unchanged and that the temperature reference applies to the flowing quantity. Retain both original process volume and derived reference volume so later reconciliation cannot silently mix them.

For the flowmeter filler, confirm which volume the selected dosing and display arrangement uses. Product trials still establish actual delivery. This guide addresses a liquid reporting convention; it does not establish a legal labelling basis, a thermal correction installed in the machine or a gas standard-volume conversion.

Is a liquid volume stated at process temperature or converted to an agreed reference-temperature basis?

Customer Questions

Are the two volumes evidence of product loss?

No. They can describe the same mass at different conditions.

Can I use water’s correction for another formulation?

Not without a justified fluid-property basis.

Does this establish the machine’s configured output?

No. Confirm the selected dosing and reporting configuration.
