Pulse Totalization: Retain the K-Factor Direction and Count

A pulse input needs the direction and units of its scaling factor. Pulses per litre and litres per pulse are reciprocals.

A pulse input needs the direction and units of its scaling factor. Pulses per litre and litres per pulse are reciprocals.

Identify the Physical Basis

If K is expressed as pulses per unit volume, V = N/K and Q = f/K when compatible time units are used. OMEGA’s pulse-factor reference defines K as pulses per engineering volume and relates pulse frequency to flow. Another interface may instead request volume per pulse. Copying the numerical factor without its units can reverse the intended scaling.

Work Through an Example

In a hypothetical setup, K = 200 pulses/L and a received count N = 50 produce V = 0.25 L. The reciprocal factor is 0.005 L/pulse. Each count represents 5 mL in this illustration. Entering 200 into a field expecting L/pulse would be a scaling error, not a large delivered batch. A finer display decimal cannot create information between counted pulses.

Use the Result in the Review

Trace the sensor output, any pulse divider and the counter’s configured engineering unit. Record whether the controller expects K, its reciprocal or a pre-scaled transmitter output. Check a known count through the signal chain while preserving the physical factor’s source separately. At short batch sizes, include pulse granularity in the evidence question rather than treating an integer count as infinitely resolved.

For a flowmeter filler, confirm the selected output and controller before assigning a factor. Correct count arithmetic does not validate the meter’s physical response to the product or prove delivered-dose accuracy. This guide deals with pulse scaling identity and granularity; the batch-reset and record requirements need their own review.

Customer Questions

Can K be entered without its unit?

No. Pulses/L and L/pulse require different numbers.

Do display decimals improve pulse granularity?

No. Formatting does not create extra observed counts.

Does a correct count prove the product factor?

No. Physical factor validity needs separate evidence.
