A response time number needs its test definition. Identify the input step and the criterion used to judge the response.
A time needs a destination
Step response time describes the interval after an abrupt input change until the indication reaches and remains within specified limits around its final steady value. The limits and input conditions are part of the meaning. A bare millisecond value omits those details.
An invented comparison trap
Supplier A reports time to a stated fraction of final response, while supplier B reports time to remain within a specified final-value band. Ranking the two numbers directly would compare different endpoints. Request compatible definitions or the response traces needed for the intended task.
Filtering and display update intervals can also affect what the user sees in the installed chain. Keep these settings visible instead of attributing every observed delay to the sensing element. No response-time requirement is proposed by this example.
Specify the application question
Describe the input transition and what the receiving system must reliably observe. Retain the criterion, operating conditions and configured signal processing. Ask the supplier to distinguish sensor response, communication update and the complete system’s observed behavior.

Customer Questions
Can response times with different criteria be ranked directly?
No. First align their definitions.
Is display update time always sensor response time?
No. They describe different parts of the chain.
Does this guide select a required response speed?
No. The application must define the required observation.
