Labeling Changeover

Round Bottle, Rotary, Vial and Ampoule Labeling: Plan Format Changeover

Plan labeling format changeovers with container and label records, tooling checks, first-off inspection and restart trials for bottles, vials and ampoules.

A labeler can run one format well and still lose substantial production time when the next format arrives. Buying decisions should therefore include the transition between packs, not only a demonstration on the easiest container. A round bottle labeling machine, rotary labeling machine, vial labeling machine and ampoule labeling machine use different handling arrangements. A useful changeover review records what moves, what is replaced and what must be checked before production resumes.

Quick answer

Build one setup record for each container-and-label combination. Separate adjustable settings from dedicated format parts, then verify positioning, label placement and safe transfer during the first-off run. Measure changeover from the last acceptable pack of the old format to the first sustained acceptable run of the new one.

Create a Format Record That Operators Can Reuse

Give every combination a unique identifier linking the container drawing, actual samples and label-roll specification. Record body diameter or width, overall height, usable label panel, closure condition and whether the container arrives empty or filled. Include label dimensions, gap, core, roll direction and the intended seam or overlap position.

A nominal container volume is an incomplete setup description: different containers with that volume can have different shoulders, body shapes and label panels. Photograph the accepted labeled sample and show how the container is presented to the machine.

Map the Handling Parts for Each Platform

The published rotary labeler uses an infeed worm and star wheel to pitch containers into a rotary turret. Its setup review must include the outfeed transfer. The vial platform uses controlled accumulation, spacing and stabilization; HML240S is a published vial-labeler reference, not a guarantee for every new vial format. Ampoule handling must account for the fragile glass body.

Separate Settings from Replacement Parts

Prepare a register with the old setting, new setting, adjustment point and any part number involved. Label-head height, guide position and sensor position may be adjustments; a different pocket or support may require a replacement part. The supplier should identify the actual arrangement rather than assuming that every change is tool-free.

Ask for accessible reference marks or a reproducible measuring method. Record which adjustments an operator can perform and which require maintenance assistance. A saved control recipe should supplement the physical setup record rather than replace it.

Inspect First-Off Packs Before Releasing the Run

Compare trial packs against the accepted sample. Check label height, straightness, seam or overlap, wrinkles, lifting and whether required print remains visible. Examine the container after handling as well as the label: chips, scuffing or unstable discharge can make an attractive label result unacceptable.

For full or partial wrap applications, state the intended coverage explicitly. Keep accepted and rejected examples with a written reason so that the decision is repeatable. A placement tolerance should come from the pack specification and trial agreement, not from an unrelated format's reference figure.

Test Restart and Handoffs After the Change

A continuous demonstration does not expose every setup weakness. Include normal stops, restart, a roll replacement and a controlled interruption of incoming containers. Observe the first packs after each event and the transfer into inspection or packing.

For a rotary machine, confirm that the new format clears the infeed and outfeed without contact problems. For vials and ampoules, watch accumulation and collection as well as application. Ask which sensing or line-handshake functions are included; a camera inspection or automatic reject system should not be assumed from the presence of a labeler.

Agree a Changeover Trial Before Ordering

Choose two materially different production formats and supply their actual label rolls. Record elapsed changeover time, tools used, parts exchanged, setup scrap and the point at which acceptable output becomes sustained. Identify time spent finding parts separately from time spent adjusting the machine.

When comparing labeling machine suppliers in India, request this record alongside the usual machine quotation. It helps distinguish an achievable operating routine from a demonstration prepared in advance. Store format kits together and retain the final setup sheet with the matching drawings and accepted samples.

Buyer Questions

Does one labeler automatically cover bottles, vials and ampoules?

No. The rotary page lists these as possible applications, but the actual handling parts and configuration must suit each container. Confirm each required format with samples and a changeover trial.

Is a control recipe enough to reproduce a changeover?

No. Guides, label-head position, supports and exchanged parts can require physical setup. Record those positions and part identities alongside any electronic recipe.

What should be included in changeover time?

Define the endpoints before testing. A useful measure includes adjustment, part exchange and first-off checks until sustained acceptable production begins, with setup scrap reported separately.
